Our Regional Treatment System

San Diego's Metropolitan Sewer System serves a population
of more than 2 million people in a 450-square-mile service area
that stretches from Del Mar and Poway to the north, Alpine and Lakeside
in the east, to the Mexican border in the south.
The system treats wastewater from the City of San
Diego and 15 other cities and agencies, whose influent accounts
for 34 percent of the wastewater flow generated. Together, the City
of San Diego and the 15 other participating agencies, who comprise
the Metro Wastewater JPA, generate approximately 180 million gallons
of wastewater per day.
The Metro System includes three wastewater treatment
plants, a biosolids processing facility, 87 pump stations, two ocean
outfalls, and a comprehensive ocean monitoring program.
